Anita Murphy


From 2017 until her retirement in June of 2023 after 32 years in education, Anita Murphy was District Superintendent and CEO at Capital Region Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) located in the capital district of New York State. In the role of District Superintendent, Ms. Murphy focused on state-level responsibilities, such as assisting the education commissioner with implementing statewide initiatives, overseeing the administration of state grants, and working with the twelve regional information centers on data warehousing, testing, technology and statewide planning. In her role as the CEO of Capital Region BOCES Anita was responsible for the 24 school districts serving 80,000 students around Albany New York where she worked with school boards and Superintendents on initiatives, budgeting and strategy. During her tenure, Ms. Murphy also conducted all Superintendent searches in her region and oversaw operational initiatives in the BOCES including building all new facilities for Career and Technical Education students and Special Education Students in the region.

Ms. Murphy came to BOCES from the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School District where she served as superintendent. Prior to that, Murphy served as the Deputy Superintendent in both the Rochester City and Syracuse City School Districts, the 3rd and 4th largest districts in New York State. She also served as the Director of Instruction in the City School District of Albany. In addition Ms. Murphy worked for the New York State Education Department as the Associate Commissioner for Curriculum, Instruction and Field Services during Race to the Top.  Anita started her career in the Binghamton City School District where she was a teacher, teacher on special assignment and finally the director of instructional data.

Ms. Murphy sits on the State Board for the New York State Association for Women in Administration.
